Family & Friends Support Group

SWEDA runs a Support Group for the friends and families of people struggling with an Eating Disorder or their relationship with food, eating, weight or body image. The group meets via Zoom on the first Thursday of every month.

The group is open to anyone who supports a loved one with an Eating Disorder or Disordered Eating.

* The next Zoom meeting will be held on Thursday 9th September 2021 at 7-8pm *

What is the group for?

The group aims to:

What can I expect?

Our Support Group is user led so, in each session, the discussion will vary depending on who is attending and what they are bringing to the session. This also means that you will always have an opportunity to discuss what is important to you. We are not here to judge you and the safe and confidential setting may enable you to discuss things you feel unable to share elsewhere. You might just want to ask for information or for some advice or share your experience with others. You may just need to offload or speak about a difficult experience you have had. We want to give you the feeling of empowerment and a sense of community, whilst letting you know that you are not alone. Our members have found this form of support helpful when used on a regular basis but there is no obligation to attend every month. It is completely up to you.

SWEDA has always recognised the value of peer support – we find that when people come together to support one another, share their successes and challenges and encourage each other along, the journey to recovery becomes ever more achievable.

Why don’t you come along?

How do I join the support group?

Due to current government guidelines, we have a limited number of places available. Please send an email to [email protected] if you would like to book a space.

Meetings take place at 7-8pm on the first Thursday of every month.

There is no cost for this service.

“I had consistently been losing weight for more than 8 months and had become accustomed to eating very little. This triggered a return of my anorexia, after a 20-year period of recovery. SWEDA were able to offer me an appointment the very next day. When we met I was feeling very ill and frightened.I spoke to them about my fears, but then took the decision to go to my doctor on the way home. I was admitted to hospital within a few days.”
