Like everyone else in the country, SWEDA has been working hard to support those in need while the Coronavirus crisis unfolds. Our team are working hard from home and have put in place ways in which we can continue to support our clients across the region, but we need to be able to reach out further to the people who need us.

Last week the World Health Organisation recognised the huge toll that this crisis is having and will continue to have on our mental health and released special guidelines on how to cope. However, we know that eating disorders have their own unique features and, crucially, there are some particular features of the current crisis that make us deeply concerned about those with eating disorders. To address this, SWEDA is working hard to meet the challenge we face in continuing our vision to support everyone in Somerset who is affected by an eating disorder.

There are some important reasons why SWEDA needs to be able to function better than ever during this time and some important reasons why this crisis carries a real risk of relapse or worsening of symptoms for some of our most vulnerable clients:

One of the key features of some eating disorders is a very high level of anxiety. Faced with such uncertainty and fear in the outside world, watching anxiety levels rise in others around them, and the above triggers, sufferers can easily feel the need to go back to the coping mechanism that they know – their eating disorder – and fall quickly into relapse. We know already that our clients are struggling and we want to help. We’ve made a strong start but there is more we need to do. Can you help us?

“I had consistently been losing weight for more than 8 months and had become accustomed to eating very little. This triggered a return of my anorexia, after a 20-year period of recovery. SWEDA were able to offer me an appointment the very next day. When we met I was feeling very ill and frightened.I spoke to them about my fears, but then took the decision to go to my doctor on the way home. I was admitted to hospital within a few days.”
