Tips for Tutors

Supporting someone with an eating disorders Tips
  1. Stay appropriate to your role with your professional boundaries
  2. Signpost people to professional help ( Med centre, Dentist, Counsellor, Student welfare, use of nightline, Samaritans, local organisations e.g. SWEDA
  3. Be honest, talk to the student in private about your concerns
  4. Do not try to fix it listen to what they have to say
  5. Ask what help they need for academic purposes extensions, mitigating circumstances, time out, extra tutorials
  6. Deliver what you promise
  7. If you need to involve senior staff talk to the student about this invite them to come to the meeting with you and talk about the difficulties with them
  8. maintain confidentiality do not talk to their friends without their permission
  9. Find appropriate support for yourself and your feelings and thoughts; do not feel ashamed to ask to talk.
  10. Work with a house mate and friend in the same way what are their worries and concerns, suggest they talk to a counsellor about how they feel meet with them and the student concerned and draw an action plan together ask SWEDA to support you in this.
  11. If you have medical and fitness concerns tell the student and ask them to go to the med centre if they won’t tell them you will need to talk to GP.
  12. Remember you are not responsible to fix people you are probably noticing something they have lived with for many years.
  13. Remember the student is a person and not just an eating disorder.
  14. Be familiar with student mental health policy.
  15. Log your concerns and worries and take it to supervision meetings.
